The Bookcase

Monster #2 is done. I shouldn't call it a monster. I mean, it's huge, red and brown, but it's also very useful and the kids love it. Yep, I'm talking about the bookcase that Daddy built. It's quite magnificent actually. We had the Holland's over for the unveiling on Sunday and ALL the kids enjoyed sliding down the slide, including Daddy. Ian is over the moon about Scott's masterpiece. I must admit, I'm pretty impressed with it as well. Monster #2 has quite a bit of storage and it's just fun for the kids to climb on and play in. We just have to enforce some ground rules like: 1) no jumping from the top of the 4.5 ft platform, over the step, to the Ian's bed; 2) only one person on the slide at a time; 3) no sliding down the slide backwards, head first; and 4) no using pillows as sleds. The rule list may need some adjusting, but for now, hopefully we'll avoid a major accident if we could follow these rules.
Side note for those that didn't know: The only reason I call the bookshelf Monster #2 because of the big, bright blue Monster #1 that Scott built for me back in our first years as a married couple. It was suppose to be our newspaper recycling organizer, but we just never used it. Poor Monster #1 crashed to its demise off of our second floor apartment balcony when we decided not to move it to Phoenix.

On the other hand, Monster #2 is going to be well loved and cherished :)

VBS

Today was Payton's first day at Vacation Bible School. I loved VBS as a kid. I loved the songs and the homemade cookies. The theme this year is Friendship Trek -with a mission of collecting donations for an animal shelter. There were all different kinds of animal footprints leading into the fellowship hall. The fellowship hall was decorated with several campsites. Payton and her friend, Samuel, were both blue chipmunks. She said she didn't like the snack - the chocolate pudding had 'stuff' in it. Evidently this was of the most importance because when I asked her what she did, she said, 'I don't know, but we had snack.' All in all, she said she had a good time and wanted to go back tomorrow. We are now listening to the CD sent home - VBS songs all about Jesus and friendship :)

This week

We've been staying busy this week.

Monday, we tried to go to the pool. We drove 20 minutes to meet our friends at a particular pool. Paid the $15 to get in. Suited the kids up and got them all slicked up in sunscreen. And then the lifeguards called a pool break. We played in the kiddie pool during the pool break. We played in the large pool for 15 minutes when we heard
thunder. Oh, well, at least I got my $15 back.

Tuesday, we went to Confluence Coffee, which is a coffee shop with an indoor playground. Then Payton got her haircut. In the afternoon we played in the little pool in the backyard.

Wednesday, we went to the gym and then the Winston-Salem Children's museum. That was a little crazy because I think everyone had the same idea. We had an 80% chance for rain...hmmm, what can we do indoors? That afternoon, I watched the thunder clouds build up in the west. I heard the thunder coming. You could feel the cool down drafts and smell the rain. I was all excited for a little thunderstorm..... a
nd it went just north of us. We didn't get a drop! My friend close the middle of town had about an inch in half an hour.

Today, we went to the Transportation Museum. Daddy asked Ian, 'What did you see at the train museum?' Ian, all excited, yells out, 'I saw train!' Ian has my knack for stating the obvious.

The kids were great today at the Museum. Not only did we get to ride a train with a diesel engine (as Payton describes it), but we got to see a roundhouse, lots of older engines and cabooses, old cars and some planes. Ian was so cute on the train. We had to hand our tickets to the conductor, who punched them and gave them back to us. Ian held onto his ticket the entire trip. We had a picnic lunch and then both kids fell asleep on the way home and slept for 2 hours :)

The only sad thing that happened today was that we had an accident with the camera, and it is currently out of commission. Payton and Ian were trying to pass the camera to each other and it dropped while it was on. The lens won't go back into the camera because it's bent. We have to decide if we're going to fix it or buy a new one.

Happy Anniversary!

- to us! Scott and I have been married 11 years! Whew :)
We actually found a babysitter, so we could go out today. We had lunch at River Birch Lodge where we both had the bison burger. If you've never had bison, I highly recommend it. Then we went to see the new Harry Potter movie. I enjoyed the movie, but was disappointed with the way they did the ending.

The kids were great for our sitter. The played hide and go seek, played in the pool, and pretended to be cats and dogs. But, I don't think Ian took a very good nap because he fell asleep at 7:10 pm while watching Wall-E.

Ian speaks out

We went to a production of Pirates of Penzance a couple of days ago with the kids. There is a local high school summer drama program that puts on a show every year for free! They have a food drive and they have a free will donation that sponsors the whole program. Anyway, we'd thought we'd check it out and see how the kids would like a live stage show.

When we arrived at the high school, I was impressed with the theater. It was built around the 1920s and had been restored since then. It was on top of a hill overlooking beautiful grassy knoll, trees and the city of Winston-Salem in the background. It was the kind of building and school out of that movie Ten Things I Hate About You. Scott and I had always wondered where those type of schools existed - now we know.

We get into the theater and Ian starts worrying, 'I scared. I scared. I scared.' We console him and distracted him with a lollipop. This got us through to the start of the show and then he was mesmerized. Payton was enthralled as well. The got a little fidgety on some of the numbers, but they made it all the way through the first act.

By the time we left, it was past the kids bedtimes. Scott was hoping Ian would fall asleep before we got home. (He hasn't been going to bed very well lately.) Ian was starting to phase out, you know the glassy-eyed look when Daddy decides to drive around a bit. Ian realizes something is up and yells out, 'That way home!' as we pass the road we usually turn down. Then he wakes up a bit and is all worried about what's going on. Daddy realizes the little extra ride will probably last a little bit longer than he had hoped and turns the car around. At which point, we hear cheers from the back seats.

The kids saw a commercial for making huge cupcakes at home. The cupcake pan that was being sold was a 2 piece set that makes an enormous cupcake out of one cake mix. Then you can make all sorts of things out of your humongous cupcake like - a house (which looks amazingly like a smurf's home), a pig, a cow, a rabbit, a clown or even a bee hive. Payton and Ian were soooo excited. Ian kept saying, 'Mommy, make cupcakes.' They started sounding like the commercial - isn't it funny how that works. I told them we couldn't buy the cake pan, but that we could make our own very large cupcakes that they could decorate. Thus.....

Ian made a train and Payton made a clown. The sad thing is that we each decorated 2 cupcakes and you can't tell which ones I decorated ;)

Check out the size of that thing!

The first sunflower has now opened! I have two giant sunflowers in my garden which I am astounded by. I've never grown a giant sunflower before, and I am just amazed by the size of it. We measured it today and it's 9 ft tall. Evidently it's not the tallest ever recorded. Did you know that the world's tallest sunflower was 25 ft 5.5 in. tall? Daddy wanted to show just how tall it was, so he got the kids involved. Mind you, this was after he made mud in the garden for the kids to dig around in.
