Last night, I telling the kids that it was almost time to plant some of spring garden. Peas, onions, radishes and rhubarb can be planted outside. These germinate in low soil temperatures. Payton asked what germinate means.
I tried to describe how the seed opens up and a little bitty plant comes out of the seed.
Payton's response: 'Like poop comes out of your butt?'
No, Payton not quite....

Kids say the darnest things - Part II
On Wednesday, we were almost to school when Payton says, 'Mommy, I miss you. I don't want to go to school. Can I stay with you? I miss you! - and Ian'
Mommy's little heart melted.
'Payton, understand that if you stay with me today, you HAVE to go back to school tomorrow. And next year when you're in kindergarten, we can't do this.'
'Okay, Mommy. Can I stay with you today?'
'Alright, Payton. You can play hooky today.'
Huge grin across Payton's face. So we hang out on Wednesday. (I had to explain what hooky was - she seemed to understand.)
Thursday, Uncle John and Cousin Amy were passing through and we pick them up, and take them to the hospital to have breakfast with Scott. (which was a very nice visit, by the way) I told Payton that we would take her to school after breakfast.
On the way to school, Payton asked, 'Mommy, can I play hockey today?'
Hooky, Payton, not hockey ;)

Kids say the darnest things - Part I
Yesterday, the kids were playing in Ian's room when suddenly I heard squealing, crying and gnashing of teeth. So I ran back to his room to see what was the matter. They both weren't being very nice to each other for some reason or another.
Then I saw that they had my workout bench on Ian's slide. This looked rather dangerous, so I told them to get it down and to not climb on it. Well, Payton proceeded to climb on the bench as soon as I got my words of warning out of my mouth.
'Timeout!' I yelled. Actually, both kids got a timeout - which is sitting in their chairs at the table.
Daddy was sitting at the table eating supper when my after-timeout-questioning started.
I asked Payton if she was going to do something after I told her not to do it. (I realize this question was not worded very well, but you know, you just go with it sometimes.)
She looked at me, paused and said, 'Yes. (pause to look at me) No. (pause to look at me in confusion). - I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE RIGHT ANSWER IS!'
I was about to rephrase the question when Daddy started chuckling to himself. He couldn't contain himself. He broke out into a laugh and let the kids go.

Chickens to the Rescue!
On the last trip to the library, we found a new book that Ian, especially, has enjoyed.
In this book, the farmer or his wife, or the other animals on the farm have some crisis. Then on the spread of the next two pages, the chickens remedy the problem.
We happen to have a toy rooster, who has now become the chicken to the rescue!
Ian has been running around with this rooster, throwing it up into the air and yelling, 'Chickens to the rescue!'

He even rides the remote control car.
The rooster, not Ian.
It's Fascinating.
Payton was playing on the train table the other day, and I loved how the light illuminated her face.
Payton, what are you doing?
Just playing....
Almost....
There.
Balloons on a bridge.
Ah. Okay :)

The paper
It's one of the mornings in which my paper is late. Late being, it is now 6:50 am. The kids are finishing an episode of the Fresh Beat Band. The kids love this show. I don't mind it because there's a lot of music - which is why the kids like it.
Peering out the door for the third time - still no paper. I feel like my day can't get started unless I have a cup of tea and my paper.
I know I could read the news online. But I like the feel of the paper. I like to hold it. I like to be able to move it around. I just really like my paper.
Scott won't speak until he takes a shower. Payton and Ian are not very nice children until they watch a little TV with their milk and half a pop tart.
I'm sure everyone has a morning ritual.
I have a narrow window of opportunity or all is lost.
It's now 7 am.
I hope my paper comes soon.

The Toolboxes
They are finally done.

Scott started a woodworking project before Christmas, in hopes of giving the kids something special made by him.
Well, it's been very cold in the garage (between 38-41 degrees), plus he was really busy at the hospital before and after Christmas.
But, today, they were finally done.
They turned out well, don't you think.
The kids liked them.
They also really liked the tools inside.
